Data is required to automate the logistics process and enable faster and more accurate logistics. In CJ Logistics Smart Fulfillment Center, the logistics process for e-Commerce is optimized using data.
E-Commerce enables orders for various products to be received in real-time. So, fast and accurate operations through automation are critical. The logistics process of the Smart Fulfillment Center is managed in seven steps, from warehousing to shipping. We use data in all processes to provide a smooth, automated logistics flow.

The scanner-like DWS system is the beginning of data logistics. When products are stocked, they undergo a physical examination through the system. Placing the product on a transparent glass shelf and moving the lever from side to side to scan the product, data is acquired by accurately measuring its width, length, height, and weight in a single motion. Product data is now in the system and while the physical counterpart is stored at the Smart Fulfillment Center awaiting orders to be received.
Let’s say an order consisting of 3 products with differing sizes and shapes is received. If it follows a traditional process, we would need to check the size of each product and put them in a suitable box. We would follow this with the inconvenient and inefficient process of folding the box and even replacing the box with a different size if the products do not fit.
However, the box recommendation system recommends the optimal box size by estimating the total volume of the product based on the horizontal, vertical, and height data. Then, it automatically completes the assembly of the box by itself, producing more than 18 boxes per minute. Work efficiency is improved and packaging costs are reduced by 37% as over-boxing can be prevented. The box recommendation system streamlines the logistics process, reduces costs, and is also eco-friendly.
When the box is ready, the next step is picking. Picking is the operation that places products into the box assembled with the case erector. Afterwards, a final inspection process is required to ensure that the product ordered by the consumer is properly packed in the box.
Data also plays an important role in the inspection process. Using the weight data measured by the DWS system earlier, the weight checker tests the total weight value of the ordered product and matches the weight of the box to an accuracy of 99.95%. These automated systems have improved the productivity of the Smart Fulfillment Center by 12%.
